IAS Awards Competition: Best article and best thesis
Our association would like to promote research in the field of Inter-American Studies. Toward this end the association is hereby announcing a competition for two awards, one for the best master’s or doctoral thesis and one for the best article in Inter-American Studies completed since 2012. Submitted work does not yet need to be in print to be considered. Only work in Spanish or in English can be submitted. Each award carries a cash prize of 250 euros or 330 U.S. dollars.

Fulbright Award Inter-American Studies, Iceland, Academic Year 2015-2016
The Fulbright Scholar competition for the academic year 2015-2016 launched last month, and Iceland is offering an award in Inter-American Studies. The selected candidate will spend three to five months at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars administers the Fulbright Scholar Program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

De/Colonization in the Americas: Continuity and Change
The conference will adopt a broad concept of colonialism, which refers not to a single historical period but to a relational mode that creates asymmetric power relations and modes of exploitation. This cross-disciplinary forum of academic exchange invites contributions from all academic disciplines concerned with colonialism in the Americas. It will examine colonization, colonialism, nation building, decolonization, and continuing facets of coloniality as they relate to societies, politics, economy, cultures, and media. More

INDIANER INUIT: DAS NORDAMERIKA FILM FESTIVAL is taking place for the fifth time from January 23- 26, 2014 in Stuttgart at the Treffpunkt Rotebühlplatz (vhs Stuttgart) under the patronage of the American Indian Film Institute and Festival in San Francisco, the Dreamspeakers International Aboriginal Film Festival Edmonton, Canada, and the UNICEF.

A New Mixed Race Initiative

This initiative features:

-a special journal issue on mixed race, set to debut in Fall 2013, that will combine work by writers, scholars, artists, activists, and more; and

-an international multi-institution synchronous teaching program, to run in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014, with the special issue as a focal point and AALR as a virtual hub to connect all participating classrooms, providing a shared curriculum to draw from and various opportunities for cross-classroom exchange. …more…
