The international symposium Hemispheric Encounters: The Early United States in a Transnational Perspective aims at exploring various processes of shaping (and contesting) trans\/national and cultural identities in the United States between the 1770s and the 1840s. Contributions focus on questions like the impact of the Haitian Revolution, the importance of economic relations between the U.S. and the Caribbean, the rivalry with Spain for territories and profits, slavery, the development of African American and other collective ethnic identities and other issues related to the ties between the U.S. and other regions (in the Western Hemisphere as well as Europe and North Africa) and their manifestation in cultural and literary discourses of the period.<\/p>\n
